Over years of wide exploration—joy and loss, squandered and seized opportunities, regret and gratitude, striving and falling short—life has often felt like drowning in an ocean while flying, like a bird, through an expansive blue sky. Deeply tragic, mind-blowingly beautiful.

Through it all, music has been a therapy. Music to cry; Music to celebrate; Music to remember what is true and right. With the help of G-d, a lifeline in a deep sea.

These songs took shape slowly—through playing, listening, loving, losing, finding. They brought me comfort. I hope they bring you the same.

With deep gratitude to the Omnipresent Eternal Love, to my family and friends, to the incredibly talented musicians who blessed this project with their contributions, and to you,

About the Artist

Shem Beck is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and producer from Berkeley, California, whose music draws heavily from his deep love of culture, spirituality, and the natural world. His musical inspirations include The Grateful Dead, Phish, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Bob Marley, Toots & The Maytals, Oliver Mtukudzi, Fela Kuti, and many, many others; if it grooves and is honest, it inspires him. Since his college days attending UCLA as a World Arts & Cultures major, he has been on a journey of musical exploration and discovery. His studies sent him on an odyssey throughout West Africa, where he studied drumming, xylophone, and palm wine guitar with Afrobeat legend Ebo Taylor, before traveling to East Africa and immersing himself in Ethiopian Jazz, Ugandan prayer music, and mbira-inspired Zimbabwean guitar. In 2009, his love of culture sent him to Israel to explore his own roots, where he lived for almost 15 years, studying Jewish spirituality, culture, and music. For most of his life, music has been something sacred, personal, and introspective. The thought of releasing his music to the wider world never interested him, but in 2024, with the encouragement of family and friends, he decided to share his music with the world and produce this album. He is now working on his next album while continuing to explore the world, music, and his own soul.
